Because it is usually impossible to ascertain ahead of time exactly what preference information will and will not be relevant to solving a particular problem, there is a need to interleave the elicitation of preference information with the problem-solving process itself. Fortunately, the richness of the decision-theoretic framework provides valuable flexibility in problem representation. Unimportant portions of a problem space can be represented using coarse preference information ■ The American Association for Artificial Intelligence Spring Symposium on Interactive and Mixed-Initiative DecisionTheoretic Systems was held at Stanford University from 23–25 March 1998. The symposium attracted approximately 30 researchers from around the world. Topics discussed included incremental model construction, user interaction, explanation generation, and applications.

ESP: A Mixed-Initiative Decision-Theoretic Decision Modeling System

Systems built on decision-theoretic principles typically rely on models that contain a fixed in advance set of objectives and decision variables. This paper describes a decisiontheoretic decision modeling system under development in the Decision Systems Laboratory that departs from this tradition and allows for flexible construction and later reconstruction of models according to the current ob...

Decision Theoretic Dialogue Planning for Initiative Problems

The taking of initiative has significance in spoken language dialogue systems and in human-computer interaction. A system that takes no initiative may fail to seize opportunities that are important, but a system that always takes the initiative may not allow the user to take the actions he favours. We have implemented a mixed-initiative planning system that adapts its strategy to a nested belie...

Game-Theoretic Approach for Pricing Decisions in Dual-Channel Supply Chain

In the current study, a dual-channel supply chain is considered containing one manufacturer and two retailers. It is assumed that the manufacturer and retailers have the same decision powers. A game-theoretic approach is developed to analyze pricing decisions under the centralized and decentralized scenarios. First, the Nash model is established to obtain the equilibrium decisions in the decent...

Integrating Agent-Based Mixed-Initiative Control with an Existing Multi-Agent Planning System

One of the less appreciated obstacles to scaling multi-agent systems is understanding the impact of the role(s) that people will play in those systems. As we try to adapt existing software tools and agent-based applications to play supportive roles in larger multi-agent systems, we must develop strategies for coordinating not only the problem solving behavior of these agent communities, but als...

A Novel Interactive Possibilistic Mixed Integer Nonlinear Model for Cellular Manufacturing Problem under Uncertainty

Elaborating an appropriate cellular manufacturing system (CMS) could solve many structural and operational issues. Thereby, considering some significant factors as worker skill, machine hardness, and product quality levels could assist the companies in current competitive environment. This paper proposes a novel interactive possibilistic mixed integer nonlinear approach to minimize the total co...
